Integrating Iron Stain Prevention, Pest Repellent, and Fertilizer Into an Existing Irrigation System to Reduce Labor
Adding on to the number of properties you have to maintain is good for business growth, but it may also be time to change how the work gets done. Automating any part of the process will prove to save time and money. Continuing to take a wholesale hands-on approach to pest control and fertilization would limit the number of customers you can physically take on at one time and lead to bottlenecks when unexpected maintenance calls arise. With the simple addition of a feeder system to a customer’s existing irrigation system, you can make massive cuts to the time and labor the property requires.
The GreenFeeder System as an Example of a Feeder System
The GreenFeeder System is an example of a feeder system that enables an irrigation system to achieve more than simple watering. It can be used to regularly administer GrassSoGreen Liquid Fertilizer or NatureShield pest repellent to landscapes and in small, controlled doses. It can also be used to administer Rid O’ Rust in irrigation systems with iron levels less than 2 ppm.
As with most automated innovations, customers may have concerns about how well the system can be regulated and whether the unregulated application of fertilizer will result in runoff into nearby water sources. This is an understandable concern. However, the GreenFeeder System is designed to integrate very small amounts of product into the irrigation system every time you water, and adjusts the feed rate based on water flow. When professionally installed, the feeder system won’t over-administer products to the landscape.
The GreenFeeder System is easy to install above or below ground and can be installed vertically, horizontally, or at an angle, making the topography of a customer’s property of little concern. It can be used to administer products to an entire property, or limit product distribution to a specific area. This can be controlled by installing the device along the pressurized mainline or on a non-pressurized section after a particular valve. A code-compliant backflow prevention device is required on all installations to prevent the contamination of the customer’s water supply with landscaping products.
Other feeder systems include American Hydro injection systems and siphoning systems, which can be used to dispense products into irrigation systems as well as to capture calcium and other minerals that affect the efficiency of system equipment. The choice of either an injection or siphoning system would be informed by the location and size of the well pump on a customer’s property, and the size of the system tank will determine the number of hours of product administration you can expect before you will be required to refill the tank.
Preventing Rust Stains on Properties with a feeder system?
When well water containing high levels of iron comes into contact with the air, it oxidizes to form rust that can stain driveways, walkways, and other exterior surfaces. Products like Rid O’ Rust Rust Stain Remover can be used to clear away these stains, but prevention is necessary so that the unsightly markings do not return. You can prevent stains—and avoid the time spent and labor involved to remove them—by using a product like Rid O’ Rust Rust Preventer with a feeder system.
Rid O’ Rust Rust Preventer neutralizes the iron in water to prevent rust stains on properties and extend the life of sprinkler components. It can be used with the GreenFeeder System when the water source contains less than 2 ppm of iron, or used with the Rid O’ Rust Feeder System, which is often housed in the basement. Rid O’ Rust Preventer must be injected into the irrigation system, via a Rid O’ Rust Feeder System or GreenFeeder System, at a point prior to the addition of any oxidizing agents like chlorine or air, as these agents will antagonize the effects of the product.
The importance of testing a water source is evident in the selection of a Rid O’ Rust formula, as the concentrated formula for extreme water is specifically designated for water sources that have low or fluctuating pH levels. Rid O’ Rust will also not remove tannins from the water, so it is important to ensure, through water testing, that those aren’t the true culprit behind the stains. You can request a DIY water test kit from us, send us a 4-ounce sample of water directly from the sprinkler head, or have a local testing source test your water.
Controlling Pests Remotely With a Feeder System
blend of essential oils / vegetable extracts
protects up to aprox. 5 days
PROTECTS FROM FLYING INSECTS, TICKS, FLEAS & ANTS
NatureShield is an all-natural pest repellent that utilizes a proprietary blend of essential oils and vegetable extracts to form an effective barrier against pests. Its non-toxic, gentle impact on pets and the environment is extremely helpful in putting customers’ minds at ease regarding the use of pest repellents on their properties.
And it’s highly effective: NatureShield protects landscapes from all flying insects, ticks, fleas, ants, and other crawling insects before they get the chance to nest. When applied manually using a pump or hose-end sprayer, the pest-repelling barrier created lasts approximately five days. With the use of a GreenFeeder System, all you have to do is connect a bottle of NatureShield to the system and allow it to maintain a constant barrier against pests.
Automatic, Yet Controlled, Fertilization With a Feeder System
Using a high-quality fertilizer like GrassSoGreen Organic All-Purpose Lawn Fertilizer builds a strong, healthy lawn, helping to fully defend the landscape against pests, weeds, and diseases. This serves as a liquid alternative to harsh dry fertilizers, which are absorbed rapidly and in large amounts every time they are applied, spurring surges of rapid growth that weaken the plant and leave it more susceptible to disease.
GrassSoGreen, applied in consistent, small doses through a feeder system, prevents this feast or famine cycle. It can be relied upon to wean lawns off harsh, highly concentrated inorganic fertilizers in favor of a more sustainable alternative while avoiding damaging nutrient withdrawals.
GrassSoGreen is also available in a maintenance formula that contains nitrogen exclusively to promote growth and can be applied with a feeder system throughout the watering season to maintain lush, healthy lawns. GrassSoGreen fertilizers appeal to more eco-conscious homeowners as they do not contain phosphorus and they are OMRI certified organic.
